Victorian Customs, Traditions and Superstitions
Victorians were in interesting group of people.
While they embraced the new technology and innovations brought on by the
industrial revolution they continued to hold onto many of the beliefs and
traditions about the afterlife from their pagan past. They believed that
many places, including some in South Western Ontario, were haunted by the
spirits of the dead. And while the Victorian’s embraced the many changes
and conveniences brought on by the industrial revolution making their
lives more simplistic, Victorian men and women created a complicated yet
ingenious language using hand held fans and different varieties of
flowers to convey messages. This unspoken language became increasingly
important when the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day, rolled
around.
The Victorians believed themselves to be more
sophisticated and modern than their ancestors and in many ways they were,
but they continued to hold onto traditions and customs of their past which
makes them captivating. To learn more about the Victorian customs,
traditions and superstitions which surrounded their lives come and hear
Karen Richardson of the Haldimand County Museum and Archives entertain and
teach us more about this incredible group of people.
